Lockdown South Africa: but not for agricultural sector …

We all want food on the table don’t we? and a good wine… The guys in the picture work at one of the best small wine cellars in South Africa; producing only 8000 to 9000 bottles per year finding their way to collectors around the globe… Ain’t I lucky to have them as neighbours?

  1. I love South African wine. We get a lot now in Germany, mainly Nederburg and some strange names which is really cheap plonk with no easily traceable vineyard behind. But someting else caught my attention: Chas Everitt still exists. Blaaah! He started in Johannesburg and he (the man personally) showed us a house at one stage. He was such a condescending male chauvinist and downright creepy and rude that I swore that I would rather live in a shack than buy a house through him 🙂

    1. Most estate agents are like that.

About South African wines: I hardly buy wines from the big estates for the simple reason that you don’t always know whose wine your are drinking. Nederburg for example has a few exquisite wines but the bulk is sourced of wineries in Swartland. Van Loveren in Robertson is known to buy ‘residues’ from wineries in their own surroundings. Since you are in Germany: Try ‘Fraai Uitzicht’ (door-to-door delivery in Germany); also from Robertson. Their ‘Papesch du Neuf’ is superb. Then there is ‘Arendsig’ in Bonnievale, Springfontein in Stanford, etc. These all produce their own wines; from vineyard to bottle. At last but not at least: Skipskop (our neighbour) in Napier. But then you will have to come over and I can arrange a private tour and tasting (the cellar is not open for public) ❤

      1. thanks for your advice. I will look into it. Having said that we don’t really drink enough wine to make deliveries really viable but … I seem to have a lot of time on my hands lately :-/
