During the years I made quite a number of portraits. Recently I started to rework a few into extra-ordinary (fun) portraits. This one is no fun: Street sleeper in Wellington, South Africa.

No, no fun here. I got back to the UK in 1989, at the end of the Thatcher years, and was astounded to see rough sleepers on the streets of Bristol. I was “used” to dire poverty in Kenya, and presumably had imagined it could not occur in my “spotless” homeland.

Lived in Bath between 1974 and 1978 and this town was quite OK but in some parts of Bristol it was a different story…. Sad, sad, sad…
