Reflections

The last few days I’ve been experimenting with reflections and this came out of it. The mainframe of the featured picture is the bathroom sliding-door (shot from our outdoor shower -brag, brag, brag….) added with me and the camera (inversed, refined mirrored and filtered/polarisation). The one below is similar but than without the addition of …

The ‘Eco-Warrior’ (self-portrait 2)

What is, in South Africa, the general conservative perception of an environmental activist ? We recently discussed with a group of friends and acquaintances. That’s not very positive. Some conservative minded people regard them as ‘queers’, ‘softies’ or as people who live of welfare, etc. (sounds like an American president candidate). Some kind of a …

Self reflection of yesterday

Yesterday we had an educational tour in ‘Die Kop’ (‘The Head’) five km outside our village. Die Kop is an informal settlement where the ‘less fortunate’ (hate those expressions) are living. The settlement lacks of proper sanitation, medication, education and many more -ations. But in 2004 ‘Black’ and ‘White’ took the initiative to start improvements; …

Metaphoto

“Better 1 bird in your hand than 10 in the sky” is an old Dutch metaphor now used in a ‘metaphoto’. The mainframe picture is that of the Klein Rivier Bergen (‘Little River Mountains’) that shape the horizon of Stanford, South Africa; the village we live in. Added …

Romancing the Flowers

Clarissa, one of the ‘girls’ of the Stanford Hotel, likes the outdoors. She has romantic feelings towards flowers; especially the fragrance of the maroon honeysuckle makes her dream in Flowerland. Oh… yes… and she loves doves for these birds are the messengers of peace of mind, she says.

Bird Control

I needed 15 different elements (birds, plants) and the mainframe is the sky. All pictured items as is (no additional photoshopping as saturation, etc.) and pictured with a Sony A77VQ with Sony 18-55 mm and Sigma 70-300 mm lenses. All pictures made in and from our garden in Stanford, South Africa.

Beef it up South Africa

The South African meat industry promotes its products with the slogan “Beef it up South Africa”. Well …. here is our contribution from Stanford, Western Cape.. The mainframe picture is that of Stanford’s main Victoria Street taken from the cross with Moore Street. The cows are true free range ones from the nearby farmers/farmworkers …

The Red Bike

There are many stories about the “Red Bike” of Stanford and as South Africans are good story-tellers don’t believe all although the best stories are always composed around a truth. The Red Bike hangs at the corner of the Caltex building at the entrance of the village and yes; I’ve been decorating the wall with …

Self-portrait

My name “Herman” originates from the old German word for ‘Lord of the Warriors’; hence this self-portrait. The ingredients, besides myself, are a few cacti from our own garden; the bush baby where we cook our outdoor meals in and the top of the horrible telecom tower in the middle of the village (Stanford, South Africa). As …

Attack of the pollen

“Attack of the pollen” is the title of this elementary poster. It is made from one mainframe picture (sunrise with gate) added with some ‘cut’-flowers at the bottom and ‘refined’ pollen in the sky. It is Spring in South Africa and quite a few people are allergic for pollen. As usual; all items are …
