Travel memories 4: USA and Canada

During several removals in the past many things went lost or are still in unopened boxes. Sometimes I open a box like a few weeks ago. This box contained photographs of some of our travels. Still looking for many, many, other travel memories; especially the numerous ones for my work to the USA. Hopefully these pop un in times to come.

Fourth impression of Canada and the USA. All pictures are scanned and where possible digital improved. (some pictures of Santa Fe and surrounds were recovered a few years back)

A Year Round Floral Display

We don’t have the extreme temperature differences throughout the year as in some places in the world. Think about some parts of Ontario (Canada) or Russia (from minus 40 to plus 40 degrees Celcius). Here it is from plus 6 to plus 37. So throughout the seasons we have floral display in our garden although something is going to change.  Here are a few pics shot throughout the seasons last year.

Bulbine natalensis ….

…. or “Red Carrot” from South Africa. Traditional healers use the rootstock of this plant as one of the three main ingredients in their recipes. It seems to purify the blood.

Rastas in South Africa grain the root, let it dry and make tea of it.

A previous minister of health advertised this plant as the natural medicine against HIV-AIDS during a conference in Canada some years ago and we all had a good laugh.

Nowadays the pharmaceutical industry in Europe and America are experimenting with this plant.

Bulbine natalensis

The reddish rootstock of the Bulbine natalensis (syn. Bulbine latiafolia) is  known as one of the three main ingredients for natural medicins of the traditional healers in South Africa. A previous minister of health advertised it even as a medicin against HIV-AIDS at an international convention in Canada and we all had a big laugh about it. But now it seems that the pharmaceutical industry is looking into the healing properties of the plant as they do with other plants known and used for many generations by traditional healers. Rastas in Southern Africa grain the rootstock and use it in their tea for ‘blood cleansing’ as they call it. Anyway; the plant has beautiful small flowers…

Out of South Africa 7: Canada

Last year we went on a 4-week journey to Europe and Canada. It was for the first time since more than 11 years that we had a holiday ‘out of (South) Africa. We mainly visited family and friends but in between we took time to travel around a bit. With my Sony Cybershot 7.2 I shot a few thousand low resolution pictures (average 100 kB each) so don’t expect much high quality. For this serie of 10 I selected about 30 pics.

Today’s images were made during a 4 day family visit and a wedding in Ontario. We noticed the the seagulls in Port Stanley are less shy than those in our neighborhood. Oh… and we witnessed a test ride of a  new type of bicycle.
