Tag Archives: software

Yesterday afternoon in an hazy environment I shot a picture on Napier Mountain towards the Riviersonderend Mountains in the Overberg, South Africa; bridging a gap op 50km. Just experimenting with de-hazing software (Perfect Clear). It works in the sense that you see some details in the mountains but the software leaves a lot of noise. With sufficient de-noising the details virtually all disappear …

The late Sunday afternoon drive (4 pictures)

Four different processing modes with a multitude of software (plug-ins). Images shot along back road between Napier and Stanford in the Western Cape, South Africa. Date: Sunday 24 April between 15:00 and 17:00 PM. The distance to the furthest mountains at the horizon is in all pictures between 20 and 25 km (13-16 miles). Just experimenting.

My first photo-model

In a small village like Stanford it’s not easy to ‘persuade’ people, especially women, to photograph them. Whatever the reason it took a while and against all odds (even her mother said that she would “never ever” do it) Karuna didn’t even think twice. She admits that she hates to be photographed but this time she challenged herself.

I prefer making pictures as natural as possible without artificial lightning and if I use a model I prefer him/her to look natural. The only compromise I make is the use of photo-processing software which I’ve done extensively with Karuna. I’ve been cropping a bit and processing in RAW I shifted the buttons for exposure, black, white, highlights, saturation, contrast, shadow, etc. numerous times to get the desired image. While taking these pictures I tried to emphasize on reflection with the use of windows and a mirror.

But before I really started to work with this first time model I made several snapshots of her and together discussed them. After that I made a serie of approx. 300 portraits and this is what’s left.

BTW: Karuna does not like bananas….

Portrait of a Hottentots God

This nice poem about the Hottentots God inspired me last week to picture one but than if you search it takes long so I took my chance and did the search like a Capetonian (very, very, laid back) and yes it worked (this time….). The insect suddenly landed on my hand and I had to hand-over to Yvonne’s hand for the picturing. After some photoshopping and adding some elements this came out of it. The featured one is with Clarissa. ‘Clarissa wants to have a ride’. Personally I go for the second one below (with bird) and the bottom one also is a nice composition. And for the rest; see for yourself. Fascinating insects; ET was modeled after it.

And yes; still practicing to master the equipment and especially the Adobe software. We’re out for a few days. See you back this Friday!!!
